The violin has rich and complex overtones, when you play the violin your ear becomes open to a range of tones, which is why having a good ear for tone is crucial. As with learning any musical instrument, it takes time. Daily practice sessions have long lasting benefits, while violin practice once a week has short benefits- you are more likely to forget what you’ve learned for the next lesson. Now, if you want to become the next Itzhak Perlman, you will need to master the most fundamental skills:

Holding the Violin

The violin should rest on the collarbone and be supported by the left hand and by the shoulder. Do not hold the violin much more tightly than is necessary with the jaw and the left hand- the violin will not “slip away” the violin needs to be held and supported gently to have your muscles relax in order to have the proper posture, while you are playing the violin.

Holding the bow

Hold the bow with your right hand, relax your hand, slightly turn your wrist to the left, and drop the fingers into place. The tip of the bent thumb touches the frog contact point. Your fingers need to be gently curve over the top of the bow stick, your middle finger should be opposite from the thumb. As you go through these steps, it is a good practice to learn how to keep your right wrist loose. If your wrist is rigid and not loose, this can result in a poor rhythm and violin performance.

Practice Exercises for the Beginning Violinist

Regardless of age, the beginning violinist can benefit from practice exercises. Before any exercises begin, the violinist must be able to hold the violin up with no hands. Once this is accomplished, the hands can be added; the bow does not have to be added right away.

Beginning violinists who have been told they have a “stiff wrist” should consider vibrato exercises, which can help loosen the wrist over time. One exercise, called “knocking on the wall,” involves placing the forearm and wrist against a wall and knocking gently on the wall with the knuckles, operating from the wrist and keeping the hand relaxed. A metronome can be used to help speed up the process.

Other exercises that can be helpful to beginning violinists are those that teach beat proficiency and dexterity. Violin shifting exercises for dexterity include: (1) practicing 3-octave scales as slowly as possible; (2) practicing arpeggios, which can help the brain quickly memorize the feeling of each level on the fingerboard; and (3) practicing sliding notes, which consists of playing a note in first position and then sliding up to play the note just above it so that the shift can be heard. This exercise can be performed slowly as well.

When playing in a particular style, it is important to master the bowing. However, beginning violinists may want to avoid advanced bowing techniques like spiccato and ricochet until they are comfortable with the basic right-hand technique.

Practicing daily will help beginning violinists experience improvement more quickly.

During performances, some violinists choose to play with a shoulder rest. Using a shoulder rest will help you to handle the instrument better and perform better. The shoulder rest provides some comfort to your shoulder and neck while playing. You can grip the instrument easier, too.

There are many brands of violin shoulder rests, just like bows and violin strings. It’s always best to choose a fine shoulder rest that will suit your violin. Overall, the best recommendation for selecting a shoulder rest, is to try several to find a comfortable fit—the brand that is the most expensive might not always be best for you if it is uncomfortable.

First, you need bring your violin to the musical instrument store. Each violin is different; a shoulder rest will not fit all the violins the same way. The shoulder rest needs to be the appropriate size and shape for both the violin and the violinist.

The appropriate size should have the shoulder rest platform covering the shoulder; it should be comfortable to you when the violin is raised up to play. Your chin should not feel stretched out; if so, the shoulder rest is the inappropriate size. Tell the store assistant to look for tension in your neck and shoulder, as these are signs of a bad-fitted shoulder rest.

You should be able to hold your violin in place without your hand. If it stays in place and you don’t have to strain your shoulder or chin, it is probably the right fit for you.

If you play the violin, or you are interested in learning how to make music with this beautiful instrument, there are a variety of violin makers to choose from. Some people may say that nothing compares to the quality of older violins, but there still remains some companies that manufacture fine, quality violins today.

Based out of France, Marcus Klimke is a man that has won many awards for violin making, and if you purchase a violin from this man, you will be getting the kind of quality that can only be found in a violin made by a man who has won medals in the International Violin Making Competition.

In Florida, the violin artist Jan van Rooyen and his wife, Anna, sell both vintage violins and Jan’s own handcrafted beauties at Gainesville Violins. Many violinists have bought violins from Gainesville Violins, and they are a prestigious maker of violins.

In Woodstock, NY, the violin maker David Wiebe designs handcrafted violins that are reminiscent of old time violins. He was trained in the art of violin making in Germany, and any violin enthusiast should be enthusiastic that he has brought his skills back to America to share.

Another fine maker of violins is Scott Shu-Cun Cao. His workshop called Scott Cao Violins is located in California, and he has been creating world renowned violins since 1989. His violins are in seen in the hands of many famous orchestra players and collectors alike.

These are just a few of the violin makers that have received awards and acclaims from violin enthusiasts around the world, and if you are interested in buying a quality violin that is made with both skill and beauty, you may want to consider checking out the handcrafted violins of these violin making masters.

A stringed instrument needs much care and attention to lengthen its life span and keep it in good working order. A violin spends much of its life in vibration and although some change is inevitable you can care for a violin in a way that shortens the long term effects of everyday use.

Humidity:
Use a dampit if your instrument is in a hot or humid area. Soak the dampit in water for thirty seconds and squeeze out excess water then place back in the instrument. This will prevent your violin from warping due to extreme heat and pressure. If you have a humidifier, turn it on and store your violin in that room. Do not store it in a room that is stuffy and doesn’t get much air. Do not ever store in the trunk of a car. If it is cold outside the instrument will get very cold very quickly and the same goes for very hot weather where the glue joints can break lose.

The Exterior: Keep It Looking Like New
Don’t sit your instrument on tables or other hard surfaces because it can scratch or chip the varnish. Also don’t touch the varnish a lot because fingerprints can leave permanent scars on your violin. Use a fine polish cleaner to clean your violin. Do not use anything that is cheap because it can leave streaks and permanently scar your violin as well. If the spine of the violin cracks or any of it warps or breaks away from the rib of the violin take it in for repair as soon as possible. Do not wait a very long time after this has happened because you may not be able to fix the problems after a while. Also it is recommended that once every few months you take it to a repair shop to make sure that there are no problems that you may have not realized with the violin.

The violin is one a most beautiful sounding instruments that has been highly appreciated by many for centuries. It is said to have evolved out of the lire, a stringed instrument from the 9th century. The violin itself came into it’s own in the early 16th century in Northern Italy in the Brescia area, by a community of violin makers and players called “maestros.” In addition to the lire, the violin was also influences by the rebec and the Viola de Braccio aka the Renaissance fiddle.

In 1630 many of the Brescian masters died in the 1630 plague, and violin makers from Cremona rose in prominence with both street musicians and nobility. The oldest confirmed surviving violin comes from Cremona, the “Charles IX ” made by Andrea Amati in 1564.

Violins age well, and the most sought after instruments are more than 300 years old, particularly those made by Stradivari and Guarneri dei Gesu. As the modifications became the standard, older instruments were modified, the neck was lengthened by one centimeter, and a heavier bar was added to increase string tension.

In the 19th and 20th centuries other countries started to make violins. Many were made in France, in the areas that are now Germany, Austria and the Czech republic. Today, violins are made almost everywhere with the market dominating in China, Romania and Bulgaria.

In some instruments, such as the Stroh violins, there have been recent effort to boost sound through mechanical amplification. Patent records show over twenty different violin related inventions up to 1949. However, even as makers attempts to build on traditional violins, they will most likely always be sought after and appreciated for their classic beauty.

The violins that were created by Antonio Stradivari in the late 1600’s to the early 1700’s have had a storied history and a reputation for creating an astonishing sound and clarity.

The Stradivari violins are prized collectors items that can easily go for hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars each.

It is a bit of a mystery as to why Antonio Stradivari was able to create such a rich and astonishing sound with his violins that is unmatched even today. One theory has to do with the quality of the wood that was used at the time. Back in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, old growth forests were common, whereas today most of the old growth wood has been cut down.

This means that modern violins are made of newer trees than the Stradivari violins. The differences in wood density between early and late growth forests are significantly lower in the ancient violins and it has been speculated that this difference in wood densities impacts the vibrations created by the violins and increases the quality of the production of sound.

Another theory is finish Stradivari used to treat the wood with is the secret to the sound quality of his violins. While the exact formula Stradivari used to treat his violins is a mystery, it is known that he has used a combination of several types of minerals, such as potassium borate (borax), potassium silicate, and vernice bianca, and a varnish composed of Arabic gum, honey, and egg white.

Most Mezzadri violins were manufactured in the late seventeenth, and early eighteenth centuries in Ferrara, Italy. Only a precious handful were ever produced; let alone are still available in the open market. Alessandro’s violins are currently being priced in the hundreds of thousands, but their aesthetic value varies from specimen to specimen. These violins are earnestly sought the world over and traded through a host of mediums available to the ardent collector.

Mezzadri violins available on the open market today usually bear the original label and head of the instrument. The fact that a hefty portion of these instrument have been maintained in such incredible condition over the last three hundred years is nothing short of remarkable. It is a real testament to the craftsmen himself, and the delicate intricacies of his trade as a violin maker.

One who is casual about their pursuit of the violin, be it as a musician or collector would probably find themselves admiring a Mezzadri from afar. The price tag on these ornaments would find one having trouble deciding whether to play it, or just stand back and admire it. If, one is capable of footing the bill it would undoubtedly make an incredible addition to any rare instrument collection. As these items age further, and their decay is more noticeable, they will become naught but artifacts. A musician has little use for a violin that can’t sing, but Alessandro will always be remembered as one of the finest violin craftsmen the world over.

Learning to play the violin is like any other instrument. The time that it takes to learn how to play and master the instrument really depends on the amount of effort and dedication that goes into it. If one is not willing to spend a specific amount of time outside lessons to practice, then they will never become particularly good at the instrument.

Although, those individuals that put a lot of effort and time into the instrument will learn the instrument significantly faster and with a little more ease. Further, if the individual in question has a background with other instruments, especially stringed instruments, they will catch on to playing the violin much quicker than others.

As with any musical instrument, the individual will need to attend some level of instruction. Even a DVD or video tape of how to play the instrument will help. These non-human variations to lessons will take a little longer. The reason for this is because if the fingering of the strut is incorrect a DVD or video cannot physically show you how to hold or place your hands.

In order to catch on to playing a violin rapidly, one must also be able to read sheet music. If this is not something that the individual already knows how to do, the actual playing of the instrument will be harder. It is possible to play an instrument by ear, but this is very difficult and can take many years to manipulate. Learning the sheet music just makes it easier.
